The opening of the new incarnation of Faigan's store in Millers Flat has been delayed due to the work needed to bring it up to earthquake regulation.

Aucklanders Juanita Garden and Mike Tan initially hoped to open the store this month but now say late March is more likely.

Ms Garden said because it was an old building they had to do a lot of unexpected extra work.

''A lot of structural support and bringing in engineering and fire experts.''

Faigan's would be opened first as a grocery store and cafe and later as a restaurant.

''It will have quite a rustic look. A lot of wood, using some of the old wooden crates in which stuff came into the old general store a long time ago. A nice, warm fireplace for when it's cold.''

The shop was run by a community trust, but closed last May after Foodstuffs withdrew its Four Square franchise.
