A Christchurch truck driver escaped unscathed from a crash early yesterday when the furniture truck she was driving rolled off State Highway 8 and slid on its side down a small river bank near Tarras.

The incident occurred about 8.30am on Cluden Hill, 10km north of Tarras, as the driver navigated the heavy truck around a bend.

The woman, who asked not to be named, was taking furniture from Christchurch to Cromwell and was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

She was not injured in the crash, which left the front of the truck and a road sign damaged.

Constable Doug Winter, of Cromwell, said police would continue their investigation once the truck had been taken to Cromwell.

A crane from Cromwell lifted the truck on to its wheels yesterday afternoon, and another furniture truck arrived at the scene to transport the cargo.

It is not yet known whether speed was a factor in the crash, or if charges will be laid in relation to the incident.
