That young people from schools around Central Otago have a strong focus on cleaning up the planet for the future was evident in their entries in the Future Central 2020 art competition, held in conjunction with Alexandra's Thyme Festival week.

Twenty-five entries were received for the competition, which was divided into three separate parts for judging.

Entrants were asked to think about the year 2020 and what the district might look like if natural resources were not looked after.

They were also asked to think about how the district would look if residents were innovative and creative with resource use.

Creating the work from recycled material was a prerequisite. Various media were used, including sand, pebbles from the rail trail, glass, the blue sky pieces of an old jigsaw puzzle, a toaster and assortments of wire and metal pieces.

Selected entries will be put on display at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.

They are all available for viewing at Central Stories until November 24.
