Evelyn Bisset has worked in local government for so long that she is going to have to get used to reading the newspaper to keep tabs on what is happening in the local community.

That is what the Central Otago District Council's Cromwell-based property and facilities officer said after retiring from being in the middle of all the action in the community for 33 years, but is looking forward to her retirement.

She will have more time to dedicate to her indoor bowls passion and of course, her husband Rodger, their two children and six grandchildren.

Mrs Bisset (65) is the secretary for Central Otago Indoor Bowls Association and the Cromwell Indoor Bowling Club, recently qualifying for the National Open championships for singles, pairs, and triples sections and made into the triples Master section.

Starting her career in 1966 with the Geraldine County Council, she then moved to the former Cromwell Borough Council in 1981 as accounts clerk.

She later became an administration officer after the local body amalgamation in 1989.

At that time, the Naseby, Alexandra, Cromwell, and Roxburgh borough councils, as well as Maniototo, Vincent and part of the Tuapeka County Councils were all merged to become the Central Otago District Council.

Seeing the developments over the years, working for the Cromwell community board, being involved in the community and ''knowing what was going on'' were the highlights of the job.

''Working with the community is quite satisfying. Seeing projects that start and finish ... the town centre upgrade's been a big one.''

Another highlight was meeting former prime minster Helen Clark when she opened the Molyneux Aquatic Centre.

''She was very friendly and we just chatted away. Very easy to talk to, very interesting.''

Deputy Mayor and Cromwell Community Board chairman Neil Gillespie said he was ''absolutely'' going to miss her.

She had a ''fantastic wealth of knowledge of all things Cromwell'' and it was going to be a ''great loss'' to the community.

Mrs Bisset plans on trips around the country and abroad, seeing more of the grandchildren, and getting into little projects she has put off over the years.
