Beth Smith says a Christmas without the annual family camping trip to Clyde would not be Christmas at all.

She and her parents, Bruce and Raewyn, have been camping at the Clyde Holiday and Sporting Complex for more than 20 years.

Their caravan is stored at the park, and Bruce and Raewyn make the trip from Invercargill as often as they can, bringing their boat with them in summer.

Beth, who now lives in Auckland, makes sure she attends for Christmas, Easter, and the Blossom Festival.

Raewyn said her family had camped in Alexandra when she was a child, before they switched to Clyde.

The location had a lot going for it, Bruce said.

''It's central to everywhere you want to go - Queenstown, Wanaka. It takes three hours to get here when towing the boat.''

People, weather, scenery and the lake were all part of the attraction, Bruce said.

There was one memory of the park which stood out as the best for Beth - New Year 2000.

''It was really funny when the power went out on the millennium, with all the hype about the Y2K bug. The power went out and everyone was freaking out about the world ending.''

The family had tried other camping areas, but enjoyed Clyde the most.

Prices played a part too. When compared with a night in a hotel, a powered site for a caravan was about $100 cheaper.

Will the Smith family be coming back?

''You betcha.''
