Foodbank well stocked for holidays

Demand for foodbank parcels in Wanaka during the holiday season has been well catered for, Community Networks manager Shirley Boyes says.

A pre-Christmas profile boost for the foodbank resulted in a flood of donations, which helped the service through a busy holiday period.

More than 100 people availed themselves of the foodbank service, she said.

However, despite the demand from about 35 families, foodbank stores remained well stocked, thanks to the generosity of Upper Clutha residents and the pre-Christmas food drive, Mrs Boyes said.

"[The appeal] was great for public awareness. We were astounded by the response and it will now be an annual event,

"There were still canned goods on hand and "the deep freeze is looking pretty healthy too", she said.

There were no concerns about Community Networks running out of foodbank stocks for those in need, Mrs Boyes said.

She expected demand to pick up by the end of January when households were hit with their monthly credit payments and bills were due, she said.
