Harold Gloag has been growing the Atlantic Giant variety for 10 years and said this was the largest he had produced. ‘‘He [the pumpkin] grows about three and a-half inches [8.9cm] in circumference every day,'' he said.
At least one metre wide and almost as high, the pumpkin has not been officially weighed but Mr Gloag based his estimate on the size of a 100kg pumpkin he exhibited at the Mt Benger A and P Show at Roxburgh on February 23.
He believed his largest pumpkin was at least twice the size, and could break a national record of about 260kg.
The pumpkin will be weighed before a justice of the peace in Ettrick on Good Friday morning.
It will not be eaten, but will act as a drawcard at a Millers Flat shop, where smaller varieties are sold.
