Grass fire near Alexandra extinguished

A grass fire in the Alexandra area has been extinguished with forestry hoses, after spreading across 1500 square metres of land.

Emergency services were called about 2.30pm to the blaze beside Earnscleugh Rd, the back road between Clyde and Alexandra.

Fire Emergency New Zealand southern communications shift manager Daniel Reilly said two crews each from Dunstan and Alexandra were on the scene, and the road was closed.

The fire was currently contained and was believed to have been started by a fallen power line.

Mr Reilly described the area as "rural" and said no buildings were threatened by the fire.

Police were also at the scene to redirect traffic.

The fire was extinguished by 3.20pm.
