A shortage of carparks in Skird St in Alexandra has led to some senior citizens falling and being injured on uneven concrete.

Alexandra Senior Citizens co-ordinator Jo Ireland told The News she had heard from at least nine members of the Alexandra Senior Citizens who had tripped while walking to the senior citizens room or the Alexandra Library.

She said it was not just members of the Alexandra Senior Citizens she was worried about, but the whole elderly community in the town.

"My concern is for the elderly people of Alexandra, or senior members of Alexandra, who can't get a park near the library or near the rooms."

Getting injured after tripping is a real possibility with the elderly and because of their age injuries take longer to heal.

A problem with that was the elderly often did not disclose the fact they had had a fall as they did not want to be a nuisance, she said.

The carpark behind the Alexandra Memorial Hall is often full as well.

Mrs Ireland is asking the younger and fitter members of the community to consider parking further away to allow the elderly to be able to go to the library or senior citizens rooms without having to risk walking long distances.

When contacted by the The News, a Central Otago District Council spokesperson said, to date, the council had not received any complaints about the lack of parking in Skird St.
