An Upper Clutha heritage calendar, which aims to make precious historical images of the district accessible to everyone instead of shutting them away in museums and private collections, will have its official launch this weekend.

Produced by the Upper Clutha Lions, the fundraising calendar features photos from circa 1900-30, including the legendary Ruby Island dance floor, the Albert Town punt and the Lindis Pass road as it was in 1920.

The Lions women approached established families in the district for photographs, while the Department of Conservation, Upper Clutha Historical Records Society and Cromwell Museum also contributed.

Most towns in the Upper Clutha will feature in the calendar, from Makarora and Luggate, to Cardrona and Tarras.

"Wanaka is the biggest place now ... but you forget that all those other little towns were at different times far more important as an economic area," Lions board member Judy Reid said.

As descendants of early Upper Clutha pioneer families died, historical records were often lost, so the calendars were a good way of preserving some of those memories.

"When we started ringing around, you heard more and more `Oh no, those photos have been lost' ... I was amazed that so many have gone," Mrs Kane said.

A limited edition of 700 calendars was printed, with more than 450 of those sold through pre-orders and dozens more snapped up since they were delivered this week.

"The response has been overwhelming," Mrs Kane said.

"It's raised a lot of interest and it's given us pleasure. I know so much more about this region than I did before," Mrs Reid added.

Profits from the $15 calendars will benefit Upper Clutha Senior Citizens.

The public launch is being held at the Albert Town Tavern tomorrow from 4pm to 6pm, and those who have contributed to the calendar are particularly encouraged to attend.
