The first generation of Wanaka-trained lifeguards are champing at the bit to tackle the job of saving the lives of swimmers in trouble.

The first rookie and trainee lifeguard course provided by the Wanaka Community Pool for children aged over 12 has attracted 15 pupils from around the district.

They have spent every afternoon of the first week of their school holidays learning the theory and practice of lifesaving and pool rules from Royal Lifes Saving Society instructor Nicola McLeod and pool manager Fiona Fairbairn.

Theory classes have been followed by life-saving technique lessons and races towing flotation devices and patients.

Mrs Fairbairn said she was thrilled with the interest in the course, which was offered for the cost of a $25 team T-shirt.

All participants have begun working towards their bronze stars with the goal of eventually completing their bronze medallions.
