Many fail to carry licence

More than 560 Central Otago drivers stopped by police this week got a "tick" for not drink-driving but 74 copped a "black mark" for not being able to produce their driver's licence.

Rural drink-drive squad Acting Sergeant Fraser Jackson said police checkpoints on Wednesday stopped 247 vehicles in Alexandra and 319 in Cromwell.

Four motorists were forbidden to drive because of expired licences and 74 were warned for not carrying their licences.

"Police will be implementing a zero tolerance from now on and will not be continuing with warnings, but instead issuing a $55 infringement," Acting Sgt Jackson said.

Drivers with an expired licence would be fined $400 and forbidden to drive until they had a current one.

The checkpoints were carried out in response to complaints from the public about driving behaviour, he said.

He was pleased people were obeying speed limits, none were processed for drink-driving, and the drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts.

Child passengers were restrained correctly, he said.
