New management for community pool

The Wanaka Community Pool reopened yesterday under new management - Queenstown Lakes aquatic operator Lakes Leisure.

Lakes Leisure took control of the Wanaka Community Pool after a community-led committee decided to hand over management to the Queenstown Lakes District Council, in November.

Last month, Lakes Leisure sidelined Queenstown swimming school teachers from running Learn to Swim programmes at Alpine Aqualand in Frankton in a bid to recover a $70,000 funding shortfall.

Wanaka swimming coach Stacey Wells said she was still uncertain about the role she might have at the Wanaka Community Pool, when contacted by the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

Lakes Leisure is a nonprofit community services consultancy, which operates on behalf of the council.

It has been criticised by Queenstown and Wanaka residents for charging "recovery" costs associated with the use and maintenance of sports grounds and community facilities.

The Wanaka pool's access charges will remain the same as under the Wanaka Community Pool Committee.

"We are looking forward to working on the community's behalf to ensure the provision of top quality and consistent aquatic services for Wanaka," said Lakes Leisure Aquatics general manager Cam Sheppard.

Lakes Leisure would operate three lanes for the public at all times during operating hours, he said.

It now manages all aquatic facility operations at Alpine Aqualand, Arrowtown Pool and Wanaka Community Pool.
