Blending cocktails and sipping the contents was all part of a day at school for Dunstan High School pupils yesterday.

The Sadd (Students Against Driving Drunk) group at the Alexandra school marked national Sadd week by organising an inter-house "mocktail" competition.

Pupils from each of the four house groups had to assemble, decorate and present a non-alcoholic cocktail.

Dunstan Sadd group member Lucy Allan (15) said the aim was to show teenagers what non-alcoholic drinks were available.

"We wanted to show that if you're the sober driver, you don't have to drink lemonade all night - there are lots of alternatives available," Lucy said.

The judging panel included lower South Island Sadd co-ordinator Bronson Tumai, of Dunedin, and two members of the rural drink-drive police team, Sergeant Bruce Martin and Constable Mark Wellstead, both of Alexandra.

"This competition is a great way to show [off] the non-alcoholic drinks out there and to show you can still have a good time even if you're the sober driver," Mr Tumai said.

Sergeant Martin praised the work done by the group and said it was good for the police to have contact with young drivers in a relaxed setting.

"This lets them put a real face on the police and shows them we enjoy having a laugh, too."

The pupils used fresh fruit, fruit juices, coconut cream and lemonade as ingredients for their cocktails and the winning combination, created by the Rees House team, included grape juice, lemon juice, lime cordial and Grenadine.

It was described by one judge as "close to a whisky sour".

The cocktails were judged according to taste, appearance, how they were presented to the judging panel and names.

Pyke House scored maximum points for the title of its cocktail: The Judges Are Sexy.
