A former Alexandra resident has had one of his sculptures selected for an international Aarhus Exhibition in Denmark.

Hugh Ramage (50) now lives in Sydney and his work, depicting a fisherman pulling his net out of the water, has already been on show in the Sydney Sculpture by the Sea exhibition and features on the front page of the 11th Sydney by the Sea calendar.

He sent slides of his sculpture to the organisers of the exhibition, and was chosen along with about 60 other artists from around the world show his piece in Denmark.

His father, Gordon Ramage, told the Otago Daily Times Hugh was born and educated in Alexandra. He had had a passion for art since he was a little boy.

"On rainy days, he used to get under the table and sit and draw on a pad."

Mr Ramage said his son had largely taught himself art, as there were no classes for it at his high school.

His son was a modest person and had just casually mentioned on the phone recently that he had been chosen to exhibit.

He had a painting exhibition in July and sold 17 of the 45 works on display.

His textile works are in the Australian National Gallery in Canberra and in collections around the world.

Hugh will travel to Denmark to set up his sculpture at the exhibition, which will be judged by Prince Frederik and Princess Mary (formerly of Tasmania) of Denmark.
