Shop advertising hoarding approved

Alexandra's first advertising hoarding on the side of a shop can be illuminated but is not allowed to move or flash.

Those are some of the conditions on consent being granted for Hadar Orkibi to display a 3m by 85cm sign on the corner of a Centennial Ave business.

The Central Otago District Council's hearings panel considered the matter last month and agreed to give consent, even though it would set a precedent for displaying hoardings in the business resource area.

A hoarding was defined as a sign that advertised anything not sold or provided in the building where the sign was sited.

The panel said its decision related only to the business resource area so there was no precedent for hoardings in other areas.

Mr Orkibi was pleased consent was granted.

''I'm pleased the council has supported it and as a commercial landlord, who is also a ratepayer, I appreciate their support of me.''

Two submissions were received on the proposal from neighbouring property owners.

One submission was neutral and the other supportive.

The panel was satisfied the sign would not greatly detract from amenity values in this case.

It said there was a mix of signs in the area.
