The convener of one of Central Otago's most popular charity events is thrilled by the continued support shown by golfers around the region.

The annual Wanaka Golf Club Hirequip tournament finished yesterday.

Tournament convener Bill Hore said the three-day event attracted 66 teams, and more than 40% of players were from outside the Upper Clutha area.

‘‘We always get a good turnout, and the charity format of the tournament is something we think works pretty well in this district,'' Mr Hore said.

The number of teams entering had steadily increased since the tournament started five years ago.

‘‘Any more [teams] and we start getting into logistical difficulties fitting everyone on the course,'' Mr Hore said.

The beneficiary of the Golf Club's charity dinner and auction, which was held last night, was the Wanaka Primary School Future Trust.

Last year, the tournament raised $30,000 for the Wanaka St John.

The charity tournament has raised more than $60,000 for various community organisations since its inception in 2003.
