Milliner Helen Curtain has kitted out her stylish family, helping them to grab top prizes at the Roxburgh Races' fashion show.

Mrs Curtain beat seven other women finalists to win best accessorising and best-dressed awards in the Fashion in the Field competition at Roxburgh Racecourse yesterday.

Her husband, Murray Thomas, beat three others to win the men's section while their daughter, Eleanor Thomas (4), came second in the children's section.

Their other daughter, Josephine Thomas (3), was also a finalist.

The family are holidaying in Alexandra from their home in Rolleston.

Mrs Curtain made her own hat and skirt, as well as hats for the girls, but her top was just "something off the rack'', she said.

"It probably only cost $10.''

She also bought Mr Thomas' winning Armani suit.

Mrs Curtain won similar prizes at races in Oamaru and Kurow last year.

She said the win was good publicity for the hats she made.

"Hopefully it will get people to appreciate millinery.''

Mr Thomas said he was not too fussed either way about entering the competition, "although I don't mind getting dressed up for the races. It's nice.''

Southern Harness Racing promotions officer Lindsay Beer said a "healthy'' 2300 people came through the gates of the Roxburgh Racecourse yesterday.
