Sun might have contributed to crash

Sun strike might have been a contributing factor in a head-on collision between two vehicles travelling between Alexandra and Clyde yesterday afternoon.

A security van and a Ford Laser car collided on State Highway 8 near the Alexandra entrance to Airport Rd about 4.45pm.

An Alexandra man, believed to be in his 50s, had to be cut from the Laser by firefighters at the scene.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The man was taken to Clyde's Dunstan Hospital by ambulance at 5pm, with injuries described by police as serious.

Senior Sergeant Mike Cook, of Alexandra, said no further details about the man's identity or his condition were available last night.

"Initially, it would seem that sun was a factor in the accident and that is something we will be investigating," he said.

Snr Sgt Cook said one of two occupants of the van had minor injuries and the other "seemed all right".

They were both taken by ambulance to the Alexandra Medical Centre about 5.15pm.

State Highway 8 was closed for about an hour while police and firefighters cleared the scene.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were towed to Alexandra.

Traffic was diverted through Airport Rd.
