The new 3000sqm Countdown supermarket in Alexandra is taking shape as pre-cast concrete wall panels begin to give the building its final form.

The supermarket, set on a 0.8ha site bordering Centennial Ave and Ventry St, is set to break New World’s hold on large-scale grocery retail in the town.

Countdown director of property Matt Grainger said that people would see more of the above-ground structure going up over the coming weeks.

"We’re still on track to open late 2022, and are looking forward to delivering a brand new Countdown store to the Alexandra community," Mr Grainger said.

"set to break New World’s hold on large-scale grocery retail in the town."

Lol. Do you or any other consumer honestly think that the OTHER part of the NZ's supermarket DUOPOLY will make ANY change to the eye watering grocery cost?

ODT editorial : " This sector is big business, with us spending $22 billion a year on grocery products in a market which has the fifth-highest prices in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, according to 2017 estimates."

$ 22 BILLION ?! Disgusting.

And from ODT : " An Otago woman has revealed she slashed her grocery bill by purchasing items from Australia and having them shipped to New Zealand.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said the savings were up to 35 percent compared with her local supermarket."

Countdown/New World.....A Duopoly with a captive market. Dont give credence to any supposed "competion" Just fantasy.
