A crop of young Douglas fir trees is for the chop this weekend under the guidance of  the Central Otago Lakes branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.

The seedlings have spread into native vegetation from a forest near the Lake Wanaka outlet.

Society member Anne Steven (pictured) says about eight to 10 volunteers will tackle the problem area,  one of about half a dozen around Lakes Wanaka and Hawea where wilding trees are becoming established.
