Roxburgh had a wee celebration at the weekend. The annual Teviot Tartan Time united residents in the Teviot Valley with tartan kilts, scarves, shirts, jackets, tam o' shanters and more.

The three day event, which started on Friday with a letterbox decorating competition and a Scottish themed mufti day for schools, ended yesterday morning with the annual ''Kilt Canter''.

About 60 people took part in the 5km run and walk event along the Clutha Gold Trail, organised by the Roxburgh Netball Club.

Mac Perkins (9), of Raes Junction, and Eva Macdougall (12), of Millers Flat, won the boys' and girls' sections respectively, and Tiaan McKinnel (14), of Ettrick, and Joceyln Springthorpe, of Dunedin, won the men's and women's respectively. Holly Pemberton, of Roxburgh, won the best dressed category.

Money raised by the Kilt Canter would go towards uniforms and equipment for the netball team.

Co organiser Toni Birtles said the festival went really well.

''Everyone loved it and that's the main thing. It involved the whole community, and that's important.''

The popular letterbox decorating competition would be back next year.

This year's event was a small programme to keep the momentum going into next year's event, which would feature the biennial Teviot Valley Wearable Tartan Art Awards, she said.

Saturday's events included a Scottish Supper at Goldfields Hotel, hosted by ''whisky master'' Malcolm Moore, which was attended by about 60 people.

There was also a ''Clash of the Clans'' squash tournament, hosted by the Roxburgh District Squash Club, which about 12 teams from the valley entered.

Co organiser Trudie Marsh said the event was for the whole community: ''That's what's cool about it. We hope there's something for everyone.''

The event was also organised by Teresa Bennetts and Janet McDonald.
