Thomas the tabby had a rough start when he was abandoned in the Old Cromwell Historic Precinct five years ago.

It has been a rags to riches story since then.

The laid-back puss has become a much-loved attraction in the historic precinct, making regular casual appearances and assuming star billing when he calls in at the weekly farmers' market.

With a full belly - he has been fed twice a day by Old Cromwell secretary Barbara Emmitt since she found Thomas and his sister Tilly as kittens in the precinct five years ago - he had put his past behind him and now thrilled visitors on a daily basis, Old Cromwell member Helen Scoles said.

''He cruises around all week and just makes himself at home. Everyone just loves him. Lots of tourists come and pat him and take photos of him,'' she said.

But his sister Tilly avoided the limelight, Mrs Scoles said.

''Thomas is very social but Tilly is more timid.''

And as well as sharing the love with visitors to Old Cromwell, Thomas had a special affection for the hand that fed him, Old Cromwell member Estelle Scott said.

''When Barbara [Emmitt] goes to close up [the precinct area] she can drape Thomas around her neck.''
