Thieves have targeted tourists in Wanaka again, with seven vehicles broken into during a theft spree in the resort on Sunday night.
Constable Mike Thomas said the vehicles were all locked and parked at two backpacker premises close to the town's CBD.
A variety of items were stolen, with an estimated value of several hundreds dollars, he said
Const Thomas declined to name the two backpackers because of the ‘‘detrimental effect'' it would have on their business.
‘‘Unfortunately, it appears backpackers have been the target for thieves once again.
‘‘It's not a very nice experience for travellers and it creates a bad impression of our town, which we certainly don't want,'' he said.
Wanaka police have appealed to members of the public for any information about the Sunday night car break-ins and thefts.
A vehicle was also broken into at the Mount Roy track car park on Sunday afternoon and Const Thomas said police were investigating the incident in relation to the seven vehicles broken into overnight at the backpackers on Sunday.
- A 20-year-old Wanaka man was arrested on Sunday night for alleged breach of bail conditions, relating to a variety of charges.
He was due to appear in the to the Queenstown District Court yesterday, Const Thomas said.
