It is the middle of June and there has been plenty of rain — too much rain for some.
The Central Otago District Council said in a statement yesterday recent rainfall has made the source water for the Ranfurly township supply too turbid, or dirty, to effectively treat.
The council said consequently, it would be relying on reservoir supplies until the water had cleared enough for them to resume the production of treated drinking water.
Until such time, the council would be placing Ranfurly residents under a conserve water notice, effective from 10pm last night.
"We appreciate the community’s co-operation and will keep you informed about any change to the current situation," the statement said.
Conserve water notices were more common in the summer months in low rainfall.
However the council does also issue the orders in extreme weather, or for other reasons like water supply issues, for the sake of public health or maintaining a supply.
"Working together, we can avoid having to escalate the situation further.
"Again, your co-operation is invaluable and appreciated," the council said.
The statement added that this was a good time for residents to check around for leaks. — APL
