Two weeks have been allocated for consultation on the naming of the new memorial hall and events centre in Cromwell.

At the Cromwell Community Board meeting this week it was unanimously agreed to open the region-wide consultation on March 2.

Before the community board meeting there was a workshop, open to the public, to discuss how the consultation would progress.

Central Otago District Council community and engagement manager Paula Penno said the community engagement would be as broad as possible.

Cr Sarah Browne said the naming of the hall had "been years in the discussion".

Pre-engagement would be the key, so that when the consultation opened people were already well informed, she said.

The results of the community engagement had to be with the community board for its meeting in early April so the recommendation could go to the council meeting later in the month for a decision.

Council property and facilities manager Garreth Robinson said the signage for the building had to be ordered by the end of April to be installed ready for the July opening.

In the public forum before the community board meeting, RSA president Dennis Ryan spoke about the group’s belief the word "memorial" must be included in whatever name was chosen.

"It is not just symbolic, it is foundational," he said.

Cr Tracy Paterson was one of several district councillors to attend the workshop.

The consultation will be online, although hard copy surveys will also be available.
