Lives were placed at risk by the recent vandalism and theft of road signs around Galloway.

So say Central Otago community road safety adviser Jo Robinson and Central Otago District Council roading manager Julie Muir, who have criticised the actions of those responsible.

"Slippery road" warning signs, speed advisory chevrons, "give way" and children-crossing signs were among the 12 removed or damaged beyond repair from council roads around the district at the weekend.

"People can crash as a result of this, because warning signs have been removed," Ms Muir said yesterday.

Mrs Robinson said it was inconceivable that someone could cause such damage and not think of the consequences.

"This puts people unnecessarily at risk and residents should be furious that lives are being put at risk by this behaviour."

The cost of replacing and repairing the signs is about $4500.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Alexandra police.
