A new events centre in Cromwell appears set to bear the town’s name, but the community board has suggested the council may have other ideas.
Cromwell Community Board selected the name Cromwell Memorial Events Centre at yesterday’s meeting, but a final decision on the name will be made by the Central Otago District Council.
Board chairwoman Anna Harrison warned the council might take a different view to using Cromwell in the name.
‘‘We do need to keep in mind that we are sending through something that's very Cromwell-centric, and when it's looked at from a district level ... there may be conversations from people around the council table that they want to look at it being a Central Otago [name].
‘‘Having said that, I'm not sure that they would overturn a decision that's made here but they may.
‘‘We just need to be aware of that.’’
Cromwell ward councillor Sarah Browne echoed the sentiment but noted few people outside of Cromwell took the opportunity to suggest a name.
Board member Mike Casey said from the 611 submissions received there were four key words — Cromwell, memorial, events and centre — that clearly bubbled to the surface.
However, that was a description of the function of the building rather than a name, he said.
Ultimately, the board unanimously agreed on Cromwell Memorial Events Centre.
