Residents of Ranfurly are being asked to reduce their water use due to a shortage of safely treated water.

The Central Otago District Council said recent heavy rain had caused dirty river conditions, which had limited its ability to treat water to safe levels.

It had been operating from stored water since late on Sunday and the reservoir level was dropping, it said.

The council was asking people in Ranfurly to reduce their water use as much as possible by having short showers and not using water outdoors.
