Abstract painter Nicola Bennett, who lives in Alexandra, held workshops to share insights into the realities of sustaining a creative career in the challenging world of art.
During workshops run by the Central Otago District Arts Trust, Bennett encouraged participants to embrace self-promotion, recognise the value of their work and step confidently into their professional identity.
By creating an environment where ideas could spark and creativity grow, collaborations were formed between some attending the workshop.
There was a diverse range of artists at the workshops, from professional artists looking for fresh market strategies to those wanting to turn their part-time practice into a sustainable career. Interestingly, there were also entrepreneurs with business start-ups featuring strong creative components.
Graphic designer Isabel Beardmore was looking for ways to market her designs, which turn family memorabilia into visual heirlooms.
Established fashion designer Elaine Booth was searching for new, creative ideas to further develop her business.
As all those attending were inspired and felt confident, an exhibition to showcase 20 of the participants’ work seemed a logical next step.
The exhibition brings together a wide range of work, from visual arts including painting and photography to ceramics, mosaic, writing, floristry and fashion.
For some artists it is their first time exhibiting; for others it is a platform to share new directions in their work.
Each work reflects the individuality of the maker while collectively telling the story of imagination, identity and community across Central Otago.
"A Muster of Creatives" is on at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery until October 30.
