Dad, daughter offered home after fire

A Milton man and his daughter whose house was destroyed in a fire on Monday  have been offered a new place to call home.

Solo father James Winter (32) said he had been inundated with offers of help for him and daughter Janae (7).

One of the most "humbling" offers was somewhere his daughter could sleep at night, he said.

"The offer came through St Mary’s School [where Janae is a year 3 pupil]. Someone rang the school and has offered two bedrooms.

"It is suitable accommodation for my daughter and myself."

Yesterday  Mr Winter visited the couple who made the offer.

He wanted to "protect their privacy", but said they were grandparents.

"This has come from the grandparents of people.

"They would like to think if their kids were in the same position people would help them in a similar way," he said.

The couple had offered long or short-term accommodation, leaving it up to Mr Winter to decide what was best for him and his daughter.

He planned to visit the couple tomorrow evening so Janae could meet them and give her "tick of approval".

If Janae was happy they would move into the house on Wednesday,  when he would have a chance to look at the large amount of donated items.

"I’m gobsmacked by the generosity and kindness of the community.

"When I got custody of my daughter when she was 1, I had a cot and a bed.

"I’m having to start again but with lots of help."

He already had plans for any donated items they did not need.

"I’m going to personally make sure it goes into storage with the Lions and have it there for if there is another emergency and a family in Milton need it."
