Nathan Shearing won the residential new home more than 250sq m design award for this home in rural Southland.

A "modestly assembled" home with a commanding view of the Otago Harbour won architectural designer Richard Wilden two awards at the Otago-Southland Architectural Designers New Zealand-Resene Regional Design Awards last night.

The annual event, held in Invercargill, brought branch members from throughout the region together to celebrate their achievements.

Mr Wilden's design won two of the seven awards: the residential new home less than 250sq m, and the Resene colour in design award.

The Broad Bay home, constructed with concrete block, timber posts and raw beams, was suited to the natural landscape.

Its linear layout was a simple series of cubes, decorated in a limited colour palette, which provided areas for the whole family.

Judges were impressed by the relationship between the home's design and finish in relation to the natural features of a sloping, tussock-covered site.

"Modestly assembled, with a simple strength appropriate to its site, this project represents exemplary engagement with the landscape," their citation said.

Nathan Shearing, of Fat Hippo Design Group Ltd, won the residential new home more than 250sq m design award for a home in rural Southland which comprised a series of pavilions and extensive glazing.

Matthew White, managing director of Remarkable Architectural Design Ltd, won the residential alterations and additions design award for a renovation and extension of a weathered cottage, transformed to a tourist accommodation lodge in Gibbston. The people's choice award went to Gary Todd, of Gary Todd Architecture Ltd, for a home set into a terraced site overlooking Lake Wanaka.

The judges, who considered all aspects of planning, materials, form and context of the projects, were Unitec lecturer Tony van Raat, Sheppard and Rout director Tim Dagg, and Ross Maguire, of Ross Maguire Architecture.

The regional winners' projects will be submitted for the national awards, to be presented in October.
