Lift for school fitness circuit

A fitness circuit at Roxburgh Area School, which can be used by the whole community, is a step closer after a $15,000 grant from the Otago Community Trust.

More than $147,300 was given to 31 Otago organisations by the trust last month and the Roxburgh donation was the biggest in the round.

School principal Gary Pasco hoped the circuit would be in place by the end of this year and said it would double as a playground for older pupils, from year 5 upwards.

"It'll be made up of four modules and each module contains seven or eight different activities, so people can go through, under and over the equipment," Mr Pasco said.

"While our school will use the circuit during the school day, after hours we envisage community groups like the rugby and netball clubs, using the equipment for their fitness and strength training. It will be based in the centre of our school grounds, replacing a sealed area."

A climbing wall would also form part of the structure.

The gear was aimed at building upper body strength.

Mr Pasco said the total cost of the project was $110,000 and the school was waiting to hear about other applications for funding.

The community trust grant was a "significant" contribution.

The Oamaru Operatic Society has received $14,000 towards its production of Cats later this month.

It will be the first time the production has been held in Oamaru and the first full show in the newly refurbished Oamaru Opera HouseCats will be directed by Duncan Whiting and choreographed by Jenny Grant, both of Blenheim, and it involves a cast of 42 adults and 60 children, supported by a large crew, including a 12-strong make-up team.
