More snow woes for motorists

Heavy snow forced the closure of the Danseys Pass road this morning.

Police and roading authorities were warning motorists to take care throughout the Maniototo after a cold snap brought snow to the area this morning.

Blacks Hill near Poolburn, Oturehua and St Bathans roads were treacherous and Naseby roads also required extreme care.

Senior Constable Fred Aplin, of Oamaku, said the volume of traffic through Omakau was high this morning as motorists diverted through the Pig Root.

''People are driving to the conditions though and the locals are well aware of the need to take it quietly on roads around here, especially Blacks Hill, when it's been snowing or is icy.

''The roads, especially in shaded areas, could still have snow on them or be icy tomorrow, so drivers should continue to drive cautiously.''

The Ida Valley and Maniototo had about 6cm of snow lying this morning but it was thawing by noon.
