New water rules up for discussion

Proposed new rules on water in Otago will be discussed at a series of nine public meetings around the province, starting this week.

The Otago Regional Council will talk about planned changes to its water plan.

Policy and resource planning director Fraser McRae said the council was preparing draft changes which would reflect feedback and discussion at two water forums in the past two years and meetings with local catchment groups.

These talks examined future water management and allocation in Otago.

"The water forums brought to-gether people with an interest in water to talk about management options, water demands and opportunities for the future.

Discussions included how best to achieve the transition from mining privilege water permits to community self-management of water," he said.

The draft changes would provide a better approach to granting consent applications to take and use water, Mr McRae said.

"These changes may affect what Otago people need to do to get a water permit in the future.

"Their views are important now as modification can still be made to the draft before it's formally notified as a proposed plan change."

Topics at the series of meetings will include community water management, allocation and use of water, water sourcing, applying for a consent and the auditing and monitoring of water use.
