Waitaki District Health Services has submitted a new proposal to Otago District Health Board chief executive Brian Rousseau in another attempt to allow scans to be performed in Oamaru to avoid patients having to travel to Dunedin.
The North Otago health service provider, which operates Oamaru Hospital, last year invested in a new CT (computed axial tomography) scanner.
It has been trying to get an agreement with the ODHB to have North Otago patients scanned in Oamaru.
At a health forum in Oamaru on Tuesday night, WDHS chairman George Berry said it was unnecessary for patients to travel to Dunedin when the service could be performed in Oamaru.
It could be extremely cost-effective to the ODHB, which he hoped saw the proposal's merits.
WDHS has made a "modest surplus" for the financial year ended June 30, Mr Berry said.
