The Waitaki District Council is seeking camper van-friendly status from the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association.
The district was already ''camper van friendly in spirit'', council customer services manager Richard Mabon told a committee meeting this week.
But the stumbling block to getting the recognition, and the promotion that went with it, from the association was a clause in a council bylaw.
Removing the clause was a complicated process, he said.
It could not be done before summer, so the status would not be in place until later next year.
To qualify, the council had to satisfy the association it had the facilities to cater for self-contained caravans and camper vans, such as a dump and watering station, and policies on freedom camping that were legal.
