A two-year process to put closed-circuit television security cameras in Oamaru is nearing an end, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher says.
The first camera is expected to go up by the end of next month, and the Waitaki District Council has adopted guidelines on operating the CCTV system.
The project has been instigated by the Waitaki Safer Community Council, working with the district council, businesses, police and volunteers.
The guidelines cover privacy monitoring, camera sites, access to recordings and how the information gathered will be used and stored.
Sites for the camera will be selected by the Waitaki CCTV committee, along with the council and police.
They will be placed in the Oamaru Harbour historic precinct area, and the central and north end business areas.
Cameras will cover only public areas.
The equipment will be owned by the council and is to be managed through the CCTV committee.
Monitoring and recording equipment will be placed in a secure area at the Oamaru Police Station.
Recordings will be deleted after two months, unless they are required as evidence.
