Oamaru primary school children are getting more active with the launch of the Walkin' n' Wheelin' programme this week.

The programme has been developed by Waitaki community safety officer Alison Banks and will be delivered by Sport Waitaki active transport co-ordinator Helen Algar.

It was designed to support and encourage children, and their parents or caregivers, to travel to school under their own steam. Children might choose to walk or cycle all or part of the distance.

For those children who must be driven or travel by bus to school, there was the option of being dropped off at a designated safe place a few hundred metres away from the school.
