Church closes after 108 years

The prayer books closed for the last time in a Dunback church yesterday as the township's Presbyterian church was decommissioned and closed after 108 years of services.

More than 50 people attended yesterday's closing service, which was led by the Palmerston-Dunback Presbyterian church minister Rev Bobby Kusilifu, who was assisted by the parish session clerk, Bill Harvie.

The Dunback parish was amalgamated with the Palmerston parish in the 1960s.

Weekly services were held at Dunback until recently.

In the past few years, church attendances at the Palmerston church had been rising, while those at Dunback fell, Mr Harvie said.

The Dunback church and Sunday school will be sold.
