The Presbyterian church in Hampden will undergo a test run this month as a future community arts, music, cultural and exhibition centre.

Since 2010, it has had an uncertain future after it was decided the church was no longer required for services within the Otepopo-Maheno Presbyterian parish.

The Presbyterian Assembly could consider selling it on the open market, but a community group has been investigating having the 1864 R.A. Lawson-designed church and its neighbouring hall retained and used by the community.

Local resident Trevor Norton, the community group and Moeraki-Hampden Promotion Group has arranged a day of entertainment, which will include a combined concert by Christchurch's Schola Cantorum and the Canterbury-Otago Consort of Viols.

Mr Norton said some parishioners had said the acoustics in the church were superb, but having that electronically tested would be expensive.

Instead, one way to test the acoustics was to invite skilled groups such as the Schola Cantorum and Consort of Viols to perform.

Once that was arranged, it was decided to have a "John Hampden day of entertainment" on May 13 from 10am to 5pm.

That would include rehearsals from 10am, a welcome by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton, a concert with music from the time of the person after which the town was named, a "Big Hampden Sing-in" and a rundown on the life and times of John Hampden - "the patriot".

There would also be displays relating to life in England in Hampden's time, the 1600s.

When the chief surveyor of Otago, J.T. Thompson, laid out the village of Hampden in 1860, he decided on the name Hampden for it, after the person who defied the King of England over the payment of taxes.

More about Hampden and his life would be revealed on May 13.
