A driver, branded as a "danger to the community" by police, has had his car impounded after he was twice caught driving at nearly four times the legal breath-alcohol limit in the space of two days.
Two days after a 60-year-old Hampden man recorded a breath-alcohol limit of 1550mcg when he was stopped and breath-tested by police on Tuesday, Senior Constable Craig Sew Hoy said. "The same guy" had been stopped on Norwich St on Thursday, and recorded 1530mcg.
The man had his car impounded and would appear in Oamaru District Court to face both drink-drive charges on November 28, Snr Const Sew Hoy said.
"We have real concerns for people's safety that someone that high is regularly operating vehicles at that level."
The legal drink-drive limit for over-20s is 400mcg. Snr Const Sew Hoy said people regularly driving with alcohol in their system were "a risk to the community".
However, he said it was "a sad fact" some people were regularly driving well over the limit and he urged residents to contact police, or call Crimestoppers if they knew of anyone who might be regularly operating vehicles when drunk.
