About 300 people were thoroughly entertained as competitors in the 10th annual Birdman competition crashed and splashed into Oamaru Harbour yesterday morning.

Nine entrants took a leap in the vain hope of flight before splashing into the water, in weird costumes and creations, including a bumble bee, a Viking, a butterfly, a salmon, Shrek and the Oamaru Youthtown van.

Entrants ranged in age from 7 year old Sophie Patterson to ''over 60''.

It was Sophie's second time entering the competition, her family travelling from Dunedin to support her.

Dressed as a bumble bee, Brytnee Firman, of Oamaru, won longest splash.

Getting inspiration from his daughter, Campbell Russell stole the show dressed as Shrek.

His effort was enough to win him the ''biggest splash'' award and the Lachie McLean Memorial Trophy for the overall birdman title, for the third time.

After the prize giving, Port FM donated $500, as well as donations from spectators, to North Otago Search and Rescue.
