Oamaru's intrepid cyclists headed out yesterday for their Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club annual tour, before the Victorian heritage Celebrations which start on Wednesday and finish on Sunday, November 16.

This year's tour organiser, Lee-Ann Scotti, said 15 cyclists with penny farthings and vintage Victorian cycles drove from Oamaru, but would pick up others on the way to the start in Blenheim.

They would be joined by four from the North Island. This year 23 riders are taking part, a similar number to previous years.

The tour will go to Hanmer Springs, with a non-cycling ''side excursion'' to Reefton for ''a heritage fix''' before returning by vehicle to Oamaru.

They will unload the penny farthings and cycles to cycle to a civic welcome by Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher at 5.15pm outside the Forrester Gallery.
