Antony (Tony) James Chapman, in his late 40s, was flown by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter after the mishap about just before noon.
Sergeant Peter Muldrew said Mr Chapman and others were working on a pump in the shed with a compact digger.
It appeared Mr Chapman, who was on the shed roof, fell, suffering spinal injuries. He was in considerable pain until the Kurow ambulance and doctor arrived, Sgt Muldrew said.
The Duntroon and Kurow fire brigades were called out and, along with other emergency personnel, helped get Mr Chapman on to a stretcher, down from the roof and over to the helicopter.
Late yesterday afternoon, Mr Chapman was still being treated in the emergency department.
