Fire authorities are yet to determine the cause of a vegetation fire at a Kia Ora property yesterday morning.
Three Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade crews were called to Springhill Rd shortly after 8am after a neighbour, from his property on the hill above, saw smoke and called 111.
The fire, which was in grass, dry gorse, trees and loose branches, was stopped about 1.5m from the road, Chief Fire Officer Bevan Koppert said.
About 300m of vegetation was destroyed in the fire, which was brought under control in about 90 minutes. Water to fight the fire was pumped out of a creek by Springhill Rd.
No houses or buildings were threatened and the cause was still being investigated.
''It's still a bit of a puzzle,'' Mr Koppert said.
Waitaki Rural Fire volunteers arrived about 10.30am to relieve the Weston volunteer firefighters and continue dampening the fire down.
