Firearms safe pried open in theft

Police are investigating after two firearms were reported stolen from a rural North Otago property yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman this morning said a house at Springhill Rd, roughly 15km inland from Oamaru, was reported ``ransacked'' by burglars about 3pm on Monday.

The two firearms and a chainsaw were taken after the alleged thief or thieves broke into the garage on the property.

The firearms were stored in a safe, but the suspects were able to pry it open.

A Dunedin scene of crime team attended to undertake a forensic examination.

The police were not yet able to say the extent of the items taken from the house.

Inquiries were continuing.
