Stormy weather battering the South Island east coast has caused the postponement of the annual Moeraki offshore fishing contest until Anzac weekend.
The contest was to be held today but a decision was made to postpone to April 26 because of the weather and outlook.
The organisers, the Waianakarua Lions, usually have tomorrow as a spare day if the weather is bad, but Lions member John Munro said the forecast indicated Sunday would also not be suitable.
Yesterday, there was a 4m swell and 35 knot-plus winds from the northeast, blowing straight into the harbour.
That was expected to abate, but conditions would still be too dangerous tomorrow.
Regular contestants had been notified by email and radio advertisements were advising of the postponement.
The contest can raise up to $5000 and this year's recipients are St John and the North Otago Hospice.
