Donning a red beret to celebrate Bastille Day is Excelsior Petanque member David Gardiner, of Oamaru.
Members of the club were encouraged to wear "bleu, blanc, et rouge'' yesterday to mark today's celebration of the French national day, which commemorates the July 14, 1789, storming of the Bastille fortress during the French Revolution.
The Excelsior Petanque club has 23 members and typically draws 16 for their Wednesday and Sunday meets, but only 12 played yesterday due to the "froid et venteux'' weather.
