Firefighters were called to the blaze, just north of the Waitaki River, at 4.19pm.
A Fire and Emergency spokesman said the fire was "well ablaze" when firefighters arrived.
Five appliances from Glenavy and Waimate and one from St Andrews attended the fire, which was under control by 5.45pm.
Fire crews remain on scene and are damping down.
Investigations continue.
